two main recipients. Those who want to become successful academics at universities and research institutions, or to those who want to proceed to a career as a professional economist working for central banks, the banking industry, governmental institutions or in economics and financial consultancy. |
Organization
The Ph.D. is a three-year program consisting of one year of coursework followed by two years of research. In the first year of the program, the focus is on providing the foundations for successful research. Students must choose at least one seminar course in the core areas (microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics) or in the field of political economy, and also choose five additional courses in field subjects (or extra courses in the core subjects), which should be closely related to their research interests. In the second and third years, students are expected to develop their research projects and write a dissertation under the supervision of a faculty member.
Compulsory components
The candidates for the Ph.D. program are required to have already successfully finished the coursework of the master program in economics at ISCTE-IUL (first year of this program), or the coursework of another master which provides a sound background in the field of economics. For such students there are three compulsory components of the Ph.D. coursework that should be highlighted:
1.Attend one seminar course in economic research;
2.Choose five additional modules, either from the core areas (macroeconomics, microeconomics and econometrics), or from a list of additional field courses;
3.Write a dissertation of up to 50,000 words.
CURRICULUM 2012/2013

Dissertation
After the written examinations in the first semester of the first year, each student is allocated a supervisor for the dissertation in order to develop and submit an articulated research proposal. The topic of the dissertation should be associated with either a core subject or a field subject (but here strictly in the areas of economics or political economy) and must be formally approved by the Scientific Council of ISCTE-IUL, by the end of second semester of the first year. After the research proposal has been successfully evaluated, students can concentrate entirely on their dissertations, which are expected to be submitted by the end of the third year.
